This hand carved toy car cake was done for my nephew’s first birthday. It is lemon cake with raspberry filling and lemon buttercream frosting. It was my second attempt at a 3 dimensional car shape and was a hundred times better than the first. I’ve already thought of several ways to improve on it again. With so many nephews I’m sure I’ll get the chance to give it another try soon.
The details are my favorite part of any cake. I could have spent 2 more hours adding more personalized accents to this cake, and I think next time I will.
Of all the sports themed cakes I’ve done, it surprises me that none of them have been local teams.Doesn’t anybody around here like our home teams? I do enjoy the variety, though, and I like the challenge of creating the different team logos. This cake is a fairly simple design, so I really tried to concentrate on scale. I’ve done a football field cake before, but this time I included all the hash marks and yard lines and did the endzones, goal posts and mid-field logo as close to scale as possible. The cake is chocolate with chocolate buttercream filling.
I had the honor of making this cake for the 20 under 40 celebration hosted by our area’s newspaper. Congratulations to all the recipients of this award! Some of them are friends of mine and definitely very deserving of this recognition. The top tier is carrot cake with vanilla buttercream filling and the bottom tier is chocolate with Bailey’s Irish Cream mousse. All frosted with vanilla buttercream.
